PSG captain Marquinhos: “The Champions League isn’t an obsession.”

Paris Saint-Germain captain Marquinhos (29) has denied that the club have an obsession with winning the UEFA Champions League. 

It is no secret that the Champions League is the holy grail in the eyes of PSG’s QSI owners. Whilst Les Parisiens have conquered France since the Qatari’s arrival, the Champions League has continued to elude them. They went close in the Covid-affected 2020 edition of the tournament, but a goal from one of their former players, Kingsley Coman, gave Bayern Munich a slender victory (1-0).

PSG are in a difficult group composed of Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle United and AC Milan. They start against the former at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night. New manager Luis Enrique is assigned the task of succeeding where his predecessors failed, by bringing the Champions League to the Parc des Princes. The Spaniard earlier said that having an obsession is “never a good sign,” whilst denying that the Ligue 1 side are obsessed with winning the competition. 

In a pre-match press conference, transcribed by L’Équipe, club captain Marquinhos mirrored those words. “The Champions League isn’t an obsession, even if we are competitors. We want to get right to the top but we know that the path is long. We have to work and get there step by step,” said the Brazilian centre-back.
