‘Probably possible’ that key star leaves in January

Leicester City could choose to sell either Youri Tielemans or James Maddison in the January transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The midfield duo have been linked with a move away from the club in light of impressive recent performances, and Brendan Rodgers may choose to cash in on one of his prized assets.

What is the latest news involving Leicester?

Leicester’s conclusion to the season before the World Cup break was a very positive one, winning four of their last five games Premier League games, the only loss coming in a tight 1-0 defeat at home to reigning champions Manchester City.

Key to this turnaround in form has been the performances of Tielemans and Maddison, and they are now beginning to attract attention from potential suitors elsewhere.

Football London indicate that Arsenal may choose to make a move for the Belgian international in the January market, rather than waiting for his contract to expire at the end of the season, while Spanish publication SPORT also highlight an interest on behalf of FC Barcelona.

As for Maddison, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are set to battle it out to ensure his services in the next window, and the Magpies are thought to be long-term admirers, with Football Insider reporting in September that a new bid was being prepared for January, after offers were rejected in the summer, while a move to Spurs has reportedly been of interest to the Englishman for some time.

What has Jones said about Leicester?

Jones has expressed the view that one of the Tigers’ midfield pair could leave in January, but Rodgers would not be willing to sell both.

In an interview with GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said:

“It’s probably possible that one of them goes, the chance of both going is almost impossible. But again, it would take a huge bid for both players, in terms of where they are in their contracts, to actually get them out of there.”

Which of the two should Leicester sell?

It appears unlikely that either of the players will pen new deals to keep them at the King Power Stadium, so it is important that the club ensure they get some money to reinvest in the squad, while also remaining competitive this season.

As mentioned, Tielemans’ contract is up at the end of the season, so it would make sense for the Tigers to sell him in January, while they still have the opportunity to command a fee for their record signing.

Not only that, but with the form that Maddison is in at the moment, it would be foolish to part with him and strengthen another Premier League club, with the playmaker on seven goals and four assists after 13 appearances this season.

Described as “unbelievable” by journalist Raj Chohan, the 25-year-old is a vital cog in the Leicester machine, and their push up the Premier League table could be put in jeopardy by allowing him to go elsewhere.

The club will still have the opportunity to command a transfer fee for the maestro in the summer, when he will have a year left on his contract, and so if Rodgers is willing to part with a midfielder in the immediate future, it should be Tielemans.
