As initially reported by Eurosport España, and later confirmed by RMC Sport, Pablo Longoria could leave his role as President of Olympique de Marseille following threats from the club’s fans.
L’Équipe first reported on Tuesday that Marcelino was set to depart the club. Longoria hired his compatriot in late June, but after just seven matches, the Spanish manager announced to his players on Tuesday morning that he would be departing Les Phocéens. Eurosport España have shed more light on Marcelino’s departure, reporting that it is linked to the departure of Longoria.
Longoria, as well as other members of the club’s hierarchy, were present at an “extremely tense” meeting with the club’s supporters groups on Monday, in the wake of a goalless draw against Toulouse on Sunday, which drew boos from the Vélodrome.
According to Eurosport España, Longoria has received death threats, and as a result, he will stand down as president of the club. Whilst RMC Sport confirmed that “threats” were made to Longoria, there is no report of death threats, unlike reporting in Spanish media. As widely reported by French media, Marcelino, potentially Longoria’s last appointment as president, will follow with the former linking his Marseille future to the latter. However, according to RMC Sport, nothing has been decided.
