PLAYER RATINGS | RB Leipzig 3-5 Bayern Munich: Perfect start for Sadio Mané at his new club

Bayern Munich start their 2022/23 with a trophy as they dominated a disjointed RB Leipzig side to win 5-3 in this season’s DFL Supercup. Goals from Jamal Musiala, Sadio Mané and Benjamin Pavard put Bayern into a 3-0 lead before Marcel Halstenberg pulled a goal back. Serge Gnabry added a fourth for Bayern before Christopher Nkunku and Dani Olmo brought Leipzig to within one. Leroy Sané scored Bayern’s fifth in added time.

RB Leipzig – 3

Peter Gulácsi, 4 – It is hard to say a keeper isn’t at fault when he just shipped 5 goals. But it has to be said that Gulácsi didn’t get much help from his defenders.

Mohamed Simakan, 4 – Had a hard time dealing with Bayern’s attack. He wasn’t able to match the pace of Mané and Gnabry.

Willi Orban, 5 – He was good in building up play and starting the ball from the back. However, he was still at fault for the goals conceded.

Marcel Halstenberg, 6 – He showed a better performance among the defenders. He made a crucial interception in the first half and got on the score sheet in the second.

Benjamin Henrichs, 4 – He wasn’t able to create anything going forward. He was also lacking in his defensive contribution.

Lukas Klostermann, 3 – He couldn’t deal with Alphonso Davies in the first half. He was moved to the centre in the second 45 but still wasn’t convincing.

Dominik Szoboszlai, 4 – Remained passive in the final third. His main contribution was from a set piece Manuel Neuer parried away.

Konrad Laimer, 6 – He was at fault for the first goal Leipzig conceded as he wasn’t able to clear the ball away. Despite that his ability to control the play was what helped Leipzig fight in the second half.

Christopher Nkunku, 6 – He managed to get on the score sheet having converted from the spot kick. He didn’t get many chances but he was always a problem for the Bayern defence with his movement and trickery.

Others: Dani Olmo (7), Andre Silva (7), Hugo Novoa Ramos (-), Amadou Haidara (-).

Bayern Munich – 5

Manuel Neuer, 5 – Conceding three goals isn’t something Neuer is familiar with but he wasn’t able to keep a clean sheet in this one. He also came out of his goal in the first and almost gave away an opening goal.

Lucas Hernandez, 6 – Didn’t have much to do in the first half. He was troubled after the introduction of Dani Olmo and Andre Silva.

Dayot Upamecano, 6 – He showed a cool head in defence. He wasn’t exposed to some of the errors we see in his game from time to time.

Benjamin Pavard, 5 – He was responsible for two of the goals Leipzig scored despite getting on the score sheet himself. He wasn’t able to defend the corner for the first and committed a foul for the second one.

Joshua Kimmich, 7 – He was composed in midfield as usual. Controlled the game well and protected the back line.

Alphonso Davies, 7 – He charged forward with pace on the left side and caused all sorts of problems.

Jamal Musiala, 9 – He managed to open the scoring and had a productive night in the final third.

Marcel Sabitzer, 6 – He is still getting used to things at Bayern and wasn’t able to assert himself as much.

Serge Gnabry, 8 – After signed a contract extension at Bayern Munich, the German managed to score a goal and was able to cause the Leipzig defence all sorts of problems.

Sadio Mané, 9 – The summer arrival from Liverpool had an excellent debut for his new club. He opened his account and had two other goals ruled out for offside.

Thomas Müller, 7 – He had a decent performance. He is already creating a great understanding with Mané.

Others: Kingsley Coman (6), Ryan Gravenberch (5), Leroy Sané (-), Matthijs de Ligt (-), Noussair Mazraoui (-).
