According to Relevo, veteran goalkeeper Pepe Reina will renew his contract with Villarreal for another year, with the possibility of the option to extend for a further year after that.
The 40-year-old Spaniard has been the starting goalkeeper for Villarreal this season, playing 22 league games. His performances have been solid and justified an extension to his contract.
The ex-Bayern, Liverpool and Barcelona player recently played his 1,000th match as a professional – an incredible achievement – and he shows no signs of slowing down.
Next season will be his 24th season in first-team football. Reina has played for eight clubs in his career, and made 36 appearances for the Spanish national team.
The shot-stopper kept five clean sheets in La Liga this season as Villarreal finished fifth and narrowly missed out on a Champions League spot. They will want to push on next season, and be hoping that manager Quique Setién can guide them back into Europe’s top competition.
