RMC Sport journalist Fabrice Hawkins is reporting that Lille OSC manager Paulo Fonseca is in advanced negotiations to take the vacant managerial role at Olympique de Marseille.
Igor Tudor left Marseille at the end of the season, just halfway through a two-year deal with Les Phocéens. The Croatian manager, who has been linked with a return to Italy, cited personal and professional reasons for his surprise departure.
Fonseca has been strongly linked with taking the role, however, Marseille instead focused on hiring former River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo. Despite positive initial talks, a deal was never concluded, and it was reported earlier on Sunday that negotiations had ended.
Marseille’s focus, therefore, turned to Fonseca, who is now in advanced negotiations with the club, according to Hawkins. An agreement to join Les Phocéens has almost been found, and the club must then find an agreement with Lille. Finding an agreement with Les Dogues isn’t a given since Fonseca, who only arrived at the club last summer, still has one year remaining on his deal, and Lille’s President, Olivier Létang, is reluctant to let the Portuguese manager leave.
