In a video posted on his Twitter account yesterday, former French international Patrice Evra discusses his time at Monaco, where he spent three and a half seasons at the start of his career and was notably part of the team that reached the Champions League final under Didier Deschamps.
The former left-back starts by thanking the Monégasque faithful for their support, pointing out that “when people ask me where it started, it started at AS Monaco”.
He notably recounts an anecdote from the aftermath of the Champions League final – a 3-0 defeat to Monaco in Gelsenkirchen – involving Prince Albert of Monaco, who he says he is close with. Evra explains that then-sovereign Prince Reinier, Albert’s father, had attended the final. After the loss, Evra says, Albert had sent a message “scolding” the full-back for the defeat, telling him that “you could have won for my father”, but that he apologised a few months later, explaining that he had lost his temper. “But I understood the pain”, Evra concludes.
The ex-France captain would make 163 appearances in all competitions for the principality side, before moving on to Manchester United midway through the 2005/06 campaign. With Monaco, he won the Coupe de la Ligue in 2003, the first of a cabinet-full of trophies over the course of his career which includes five Premier League titles, two Serie A winner’s medals, and a Champions League win with the Red Devils.
