Championship side Watford have announced the appointment of Frenchman Valérien Ismaël as the club’s new Head Coach, with the 47-year-old taking charge in England for the third time after previously managing Barnsley and West Bromwich.
The former defender was a free agent since being dismissed by Beşiktaş at the start of the campaign after a poor run of results culminated in a defeat to then-18th-placed Hatayspor. Now, he replaces Chris Wilder – who himself took over mid-season from Slaven Bilić – after a season that has seen the former Premier League outfit miss out on the play-offs, ending the season in 11th place.
The ex-France youth international turned out in his playing days for hometown club Strasbourg, as well as Crystal Palace, Lens, and Bayern Munich. He ended his career at Hannover, and would remain at the German club to begin his managerial career with their reserve side before moving on to Wolfsburg.
