Bayern Munich have announced Michael Rechner as their new goalkeeping coach.
Though backroom staff positions don’t often make the news, this is a unique case. The signing of Rechner from TSG Hoffenheim came from the surprise dismissal of former Bayern goalkeeper coach Toni Tapalović.
Tapalović had been with Bayern Munich for over ten years and has been a consistent figure within the backroom staff as the Bavarians dominated the German game.
What added mystery to this sacking was Alexander Nübel explaining he would not return to Bayern as long as Toni Tapalović remained as goalkeeper coach. The reason for this is the fact that Nübel felt ignored by Tapalović as the coach barely contracted him during his time in Munich and has not contacted him since he moved to Monaco.
Rechner joins the backroom staff at Bayern and immediately took part in training on Wednesday. The 42-year-old had previously worked closely with head coach Julian Nagelsmann during their time at TSG Hoffenheim.
