Official | Makoto Hasebe signs contract extension at Eintracht Frankfurt until 2027

Eintracht Frankfurt have announced that club captain Makoto Hasebe has extended his contract until 2027 with his playing contract expiring in 2024.

On extending his contract past his 40th birthday, Hasebe said: “I’m very happy to be able to play football at the highest level at Eintracht for another year. It’s special to be part of the team at such a big, successful club when I turn 40. I’ll continue to take on responsibility, I want to be a role model for our young players and I want to lead by example. Frankfurt has become my home and Eintracht is my club. That’s why I’m already looking forward to being part of this club after my playing career.”

Sporting director Markus Krösche also spoke on 39-year-old’s contract extension: “Makoto is the only professional player who can decide for himself whether to extend his contract. We’re glad he has made this decision and will remain a player with us for another year. With his attitude, discipline and football ability, he is not only a complete role model in our team but remains an asset to our game. At nearly 40 years old, he is a Bundesliga great and an ambassador for Eintracht Frankfurt and German football beyond this country’s borders.”

At the end of 2024, Hasebe will then join the coaching staff at Frankfurt with his contract expiring then in 2027. With his contract extension, Hasebe can become the oldest player ever to play for Frankfurt in the Bundesliga, with his 40th birthday being in January next year.

Hasebe joined Frankfurt in 2014 from 1.FC Nuremberg on a free transfer. In his 10-year stay at the club, Hasebe has made over 279 appearances for Frankfurt and has been a part of the teams to have won the Europa League and DFB Pokal. The former Japan international will have spent over 15 years in the Bundesliga having also played for Wolfsburg where he won the Bundesliga in 2009.
