Not long after rumors began surfacing on Sunday, Lukas Nmecha’s move to Leeds United was officially confirmed. The Wolfsburg striker returns to the Premier League, where he once made two appearances for former academy side Manchester City. Nmecha will serve under former Bundesliga head coach Daniel Farke in Yorkshire. All three of Nmecha’s Bundesliga goals this season came against Farke’s former club, Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Kicker reports that Nmecha’s new Leeds contract is heavily contingent on performance-based incentives. The newly promoted EPL side apparently seeks to hedge its bets with the 26-year-old following his long history with injury over the past few years. Nmecha himself declined an offer to remain with Wolfsburg, seemingly betting on himself to return to his old form.
“Lukas has always conducted himself in a highly professional manner at VfL Wolfsburg, even during difficult periods,” Wolfsburg managing director Sebastian Schindzielorz noted in a club statement. “Despite a few setbacks, he never lost focus and always put the team first. We wish him all the best for the future, both personally and professionally.“
