Official | Julian Weigl joins Borussia Mönchengladbach on a permanent deal

Borussia Mönchengladbach have announced that they have made Julian Weigl’s loan move from Benfica permanent. The midfielder signs a contract until 2028. 

On his permanent move, Weigl said: “I am happy that we were able to agree. I am full of anticipation for what is coming and have a great desire to move forward with me.”

In the previous loan agreement with Benfica, there was a buy option of €15m which was too high for Gladbach. The new renegotiated fee for Weigl is €7.18m. 

While sporting director, Roland Virkus commented on why they made the move permanent: “Julian is an important building block for our team in terms of his football class, but also in terms of his personality. He immediately became one of the leaders here, and we are pleased that he has clearly confessed to Borussia.”

The midfielder has played 20 times for Gladbach this season and scored his first goal of the season against VfB Stuttgart last weekend in Gladbach’s 2-1 loss. The 27-year-old has immediately become a key figure in the dressing room for Gladbach and that role is set to increase with the departure of Lars Stindl to Karlsruhe in the summer.

Weigl is Gladbach’s second signing for next season after the club announced the signing of Lukas Ullrich on a free transfer from Hertha Berlin.
