RB Leipzig have this afternoon announced the contract extension of central-defender Joško Gvardiol (20) by a further year until 2027.
It was reported early last month that Leipzig wanted to extend the contract of Gvardiol beyond 2026 amid interest from the Premier League – both Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea showed concrete interest in signing the Croatia international.
Chelsea made a significant attempt to sign Gvardiol, submitting an opening proposal of a reported fee around €90m to RB Leipzig, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Although no details have been released, Gvardiol earned a reported €2m salary on his previous contract, which could have risen by around €5m to €7m. The former Dinamo Zagreb defender feels comfortable in Leipzig and has featured in all four Bundesliga games this season.
Gvardiol joined the Saxony club from Dinamo Zagreb for just shy of €20m in July 2021. The Croatian, who can operate centrally and at left-back, has played 51 games across all competitions.
