RC Strasbourg Alsace have announced the end of Frédéric Antonetti’s tenure as head coach. The experienced Corsican manager was expected to remain in the dugout at La Meinau after leading Strasbourg to safety, but the club’s takeover by BlueCo, the American owners of Chelsea FC, seems to have changed the club’s stance as it enters a new era. Antonetti was not considered to be the best manager to embody Strasbourg’s new ambitious project. Antonetti’s departure has been mutually agreed.

“Frédéric had a mission and he perfectly accomplished it”, said Strasbourg president Marc Keller. “I was very impressed by his ability to restore confidence and recreate a dynamic in a delicate period. But a new cycle is starting and I am convinced that it is better to stop on this good note. We both agree on that point.” Antonetti’s record at Strasbourg, where he was embroiled in a relegation fight is very good, clinching six wins and four draws in 15 games played, racking up 22 vital points.

I am happy to have been able to train such a club. I shared wonderful moments there with an exemplary and passionate public who always backed us in victory as in defeat”, Antonetti said. “A new era is coming with the arrival of new investors who will provide the club with new resources. In this changing Ligue 1, which is undergoing profound upheavals, I wish them much success. The people of Strasbourg deserve it.”

According to L’Equipe, former Union Saint-Gilloise manager Karel Geraerts is being considered to be the first manager of the BlueCo-era at Strasbourg. The Belgian has also been linked with the managerial vacancies at OGC Nice and AS Monaco but is not thought that he is the favourite for either role.
