Nottingham Forest in talks to sign USA midfielder Giovani Reyna

Nottingham Forest have opened talks to sign Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Gio Reyna, according to The Athletic.

The Tricky Trees are plotting a loan move until the end of the season. Forest are eager to secure the rising American star and are pushing hard for a deal.

Also, they would like to put a purchase option in the deal to help them secure the player if he performs well – a clause that would appeal to BVB.

The 21-year-old, whose Dortmund contract runs out in 2025, has seen limited playing time this season.

He has started only twice, coming off the bench in another 11 outings. He is reportedly unhappy with his game time and is happy to head elsewhere in search of it.

Injuries and a brief falling out with USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter haven’t helped his cause, but that hasn’t dimmed his star, which is lined with plenty of potential.

Reyna joined Dortmund’s academy from New York City in 2019 and quickly rose through the ranks, receiving plaudits and earning rave reviews for his performance at that level.

By 2020, he was a first-team fixture, lifting the DFB-Pokal with the Black and Yellows. Forest hope to unlock his talent in the Premier League.

Reyna seems tailor-made for Forest. They have signed exciting youngsters like Anthony Elanga and Callum Hudson-Odoi but still lack depth in wide positions.

Reyna can plug that gap seamlessly and shine in a more central attacking role, potentially offering cover for Morgan Gibbs-White when injuries strike.

Forest are building for the future, and Reyna ticks all the boxes. His youthful exuberance and reputation as a top talent for the USMNT (with two major tournaments looming), make him an ideal target.

The prospect of securing him permanently after a six-month audition in the Premier League also makes the deal very exciting for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
