Nottingham Forest are closing in on a £37.5 million agreement with Ipswich Town for Omari Hutchinson (The Athletic).
Talks have progressed to an advanced stage after Forest’s initial £35 million offer was rejected.
Forest have already agreed personal terms with the winger ahead of a summer transfer.
If confirmed, the transfer would surpass Forest’s current record fee, set last month with the £35 million signing of Dan Ndoye from Bologna.
Hutchinson caught the eye last term despite being relegated with Ipswich Town. His tireless work rate and threat with the ball on the right flank caught Forest’s eye.
The 21-year-old bagged three goals in 31 Premier League appearances.
He helped the Tractor Boys climb into the top flight with 10 goals in the Championship the previous season, while on loan from Chelsea.
The England youth international was also part of the Young Lions that won the European Under-21 Championship this summer.
Hutchinson is a better option than Traore
Hutchinson’s arrival would be a far more progressive move than turning to Adama Traore.
While the Fulham winger boasts raw pace and power, his end product has consistently underwhelmed, with just 14 goals across 247 Premier League appearances.
The 29-year-old ceiling is well established, whereas Hutchinson still has years to refine his game.
Forest would be investing in a player who can develop into a long-term asset, rather than a short-term gamble.
In terms of creativity, versatility and future resale value, Hutchinson represents a more ambitious signing than Traore ever could be.
Forest are still trying to sign Rennes forward Arnaud Kalimuendo. They have also been linked with James McAtee (Manchester City) and Yunus Musah (AC Milan).
