According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle United want more than the official bid of €25m offered by Al-Ahli to sell Allan Saint-Maximin. Despite the Magpies wanting an increased bid for the Frenchman, negotiations between the two clubs are advancing to crucial stages. This contrasts with previous reports that a deal in principle between the two clubs had been agreed upon.
Upon the sale of the former Nice winger, Newcastle plan to bring in Harvey Barnes from recently-relegated Leicester City to bolster Eddie Howe’s squad ahead of Champions League participation next season. Saint-Maximin has been offered a reported salary of €12m a year and is leaning towards accepting a deal to move to the Middle East.
Napoli had also been interested in the 26-year-old. However, following this bid from Saudi Arabia, a move to the Italian champions now looks unlikely. Édouard Mendy and Roberto Firmino have already made the switch to Al-Ahli this summer and the club are also hoping to sign Riyad Mahrez from Manchester City.
