Newcastle United plot summer move for Kieran Tierney

Newcastle United are aiming to snap up Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney in the upcoming transfer window, according to The Sun.

Since the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City last summer, Tierney has often found himself playing second fiddle.

He has started just five Premier League games this term, including the 3-3 draw against Southampton last time out.

As a result, the Scotland international is considering his future in north London after a discussion with manager Mikel Arteta sometime last month.

“Very good because we talked and we discussed the situation and had a very similar opinion about that,” Arteta told football.london.

“He knows his role – under me, he’s played a lot, more than any other player probably compared to the previous players at the club in the last three years and he understands the situation and he needs to challenge the situation.”

A move to Newcastle is now on the cards for Tierney, who still has three years left on his current deal at the Emirates Stadium.

Eddie Howe’s men have had to field Dan Burn in an unnatural position at left-back more often than not this season and the acquisition of a new left-back is a major priority going forward.

Since their acquisition by the Public Investment Fund, Newcastle have been very active in the transfer market, splurging the cash on the likes of Bruno Guimaraes, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak.

With Eddie Howe’s men sitting fourth in the Premier League table and on course to secure a return to the Champions League, they will be looking to further strengthen their squad next summer to cope with the added demands of European football.

In the meantime, Newcastle United set out to take one step further towards continental qualification when they welcome Tottenham Hotspur to St James’ Park later today.
