Newcastle United are ‘pushing hard’ to sign Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella this summer, according to The Telegraph.
However, there are conflicting reports about the potential transfer, with Calciomercato claiming the player’s agent is yet to speak to the Premier League club.
Newcastle reportedly want to complete a deal for around £50 million, but Inter will likely demand more for one of their prized assets.
Barella has been superb for Inter since joining them from Cagliari. He can play as a deep-lying controller, a more advanced midfielder and anything in between.
He bagged six goals and six assists in 35 league appearances this season and added another three goals in the Champions League as Inter reached the final.
Barella also helped his side win the Italian Cup and Italian Super Cup.
He is a crucial player for Simeone Inzaghi’s side, winning back-to-back Serie A Midfielder of the Season awards.
Despite qualifying for the Champions League next season, Newcastle reportedly have limited funds to play with in the transfer market.
Their financial department has told them they can only spend around £75 million in the summer transfer window without breaching Financial Fair Play rules.
Newcastle have earmarked most of the funds for two midfield additions.
They reportedly want James Maddison and Barella this summer, but their budget may not be enough for both players.
Leicester City have placed a £60 million price tag on the England international. The Foxes have dropped into the Championship, but they are unwilling to give up one of their top players easily.
The Tynesiders will try to reduce the fee for Maddison to fit into their meagre budget.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is adamant he needs two top-quality midfielders ahead of next season as they compete on multiple fronts.
