Newcastle now ‘in talks’ over £60m star at St James’ Park

Newcastle United are ‘in talks’ to sign Everton winger Anthony Gordon in the final stages of the winter transfer window, Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has told GiveMeSport.

The Magpies have emerged as frontrunners in the race to sign the 21-year-old as manager Eddie Howe looks to boost his side’s chances of securing a place in next season’s Champions League.

Newcastle United transfer news – Anthony Gordon

Luke Edwards of The Telegraph has revealed that Newcastle ‘are confident’ they have beaten off competition from Chelsea for the signature of Gordon.

It’s believed that the north east outfit saw a £35 million bid rejected by Everton for the versatile attacker in the summer but that they have rekindled their interest following the departure of Chris Wood.

However, despite talks reportedly progressing well, Newcastle are said to be determined not to overpay for Gordon, meaning Everton will have to lower their £60 million asking price.

As a result, Howe’s charges are believed to be keeping their options open at this moment in time, and Chelsea’s Hakim Ziyech is an alternative target for them.

Gordon has two and a half years remaining on his current contract at Goodison Park, though, meaning Everton are in a strong position around the negotiating table despite their struggles both on and off the pitch.

What has Sheth said about Gordon?

Sheth has told GMS that Newcastle are discussing a possible deal for Gordan with the Toffees despite his below-par performances for his boyhood club in recent weeks.

He said: “In the last 24 to 48 hours, it’s now emerging that Newcastle are in talks with Everton over the potential signing of Anthony Gordon.

“If you remember, he came very, very close to joining Chelsea for around £60 million in the summer. Everton held onto him, but he hasn’t really been featuring of late, he’s not been first choice under Frank Lampard. Of course, Frank Lampard has been sacked now.”

Would Gordon be a good signing?

As Sheth alluded to, Gordon hasn’t hit top form for Everton of late, scoring just three goals and failing to provide a single assist in his 18 appearances this season.

However, the England Under-21 international is known for his impressive work rate, and his underlying numbers indicate he is still contributing to the team defensively.

Alan Shearer celebrating scoring

Premier League and Newcastle United all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer is a true legend of the game, but when did he leave their club?

As per FBref, Gordan has ranked in the 99th percentile for blocks, 97th for tackles, and 84th for clearances amongst his positional peers over the last year.

Howe is a manager who greatly appreciates that aspect of the game, and Newcastle could secure themselves another astute acquisition if they manage to get this deal over the line.
