Newcastle United have reportedly emerged as suitors for Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kerem Demirbay.

According to Sky Germany, the Magpies are “keeping a close eye” on the 29-year-old.

Demirbay is expected to leave the club this summer with one year left on his contract and would cost around €4-5 million.

Leverkusen paid a whopping €32 million to sign Demirbay from Hoffenheim in 2019, but as club boss Simon Rolfes recently pointed out, he has never quite lived up to expectations.

“He has had good phases and is involved in goals, but hasn’t consistently fulfilled his potential so far,” Rolfes told Kicker.

“I’m convinced that more is possible with his technical qualities.”
