Newcastle identify ‘priority’ signing from Man City in January

Newcastle United have earmarked Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips as their ‘priority’ in the January transfer window, as per inews

The Magpies lost 2-1 against AC Milan as their Champions League campaign ended in heartbreak last night.

They finished bottom of the table with five points, and won’t be playing in the Europa League.

Eddie Howe is under no pressure to lose the job as he retains the support of everyone at the club, including the players.

The Magpies need to bolster their squad in the January transfer window, and they have been heavily linked with Phillips who has dropped down the pecking order at the club.

Destined to leave

Man City manager Pep Guardiola said earlier this month that Phillips is not a part of his plans even though he respects him highly as a professional.

The Magpies need to bolster their midfielder after Sandro Tonali was banned for the rest of the season.

Phillips has managed only 89 minutes of Premier League football this season, and it is evident that his future lies elsewhere.

It is unclear whether Newcastle will look to sign him permanently or on loan. Phillips was one of the top performers for England at the 2020 European Championship, and he excelled at Leeds United under Marcelo Bielsa.

However, his career has taken a massive dip after joining City. He has plenty of experience playing in the Premier League and could be a fantastic addition to Newcastle.
