Newcastle United have Inter Milan attacking midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu on their ‘watch list’, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The 28-year-old has reportedly caught the attention of several Premier League clubs in recent years, with the Magpies the latest side to be credited with an interest in him.

What is the latest news involving Calhanoglu?

Italian outlet Calciomercato has claimed that both Newcastle and Manchester United would be willing to splash out up to €40 million (£34.7m) on Calhanoglu over the coming months.

The Turkey international’s £154,500-per-week contract at San Siro is due to expire in the summer of 2024, meaning the Nerazzurri could be forced to sanction his sale if he refuses to put pen to paper on fresh terms.

Newcastle attempted to improve their creativity in the engine room in the previous transfer window but saw two bids rejected by Leicester City for James Maddison.

It appears as though Eddie Howe’s charges have now moved on to alternative targets, and the acquisition of Calhanoglu would surely be seen as a significant coup for the ambitious side.

What has Jones said about Calhanoglu?

Jones has questioned whether Calhanoglu is a ‘top target’ on Tyneside but believes he is on Newcastle’s radar and will be being watched by several other clubs as well.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “I’m not sure he’s a top target, but I think he is somebody that’s on the watch list.

“His future always seems to be up in the air, and Newcastle, I’d imagine, are just one of like five or six clubs that are looking at the situation.”

Would Calhanoglu be a good signing?

Calhanoglu registered an impressive eight goals and 13 assists in 46 appearances for Inter last term after arriving from city rivals AC Milan on a free transfer.

The technically gifted star fired Simone Inzaghi’s side to the Italian Cup while putting up some eye-catching underlying numbers along the way, leading to him being labelled ‘exceptional’.

As per FBref, Calhanoglu has ranked in the 99th percentile for shot-creating actions, 95th for total shots, 86th for progressive passes received and 83rd for progressive carries amongst his positional peers over the last year.

Calhanoglu has also racked up five goal contributions in his opening 14 outings of the current campaign, and he surely has the ability to take Newcastle to the next level should he complete a switch to the club.
