Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann took off Joao Cancelo at halftime against PSG, replacing him with Alphonso Davies. In a post-match interview, the 35-year-old explained why.
Joao Cancelo only played 45 minutes against Paris Saint-Germain yesterday, as Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann chose to replace him with Alphonso Davies, who provided the assist for Kingsley Coman’s winner.
Asked about the substitution after the game, Julian Nagelsmann explained:
“We knew that when ‘Phonzo’ would break through on his wing, we’d outnumber them. That’s how we scored the goal. That’s how we scored the goal. João didn’t really get into deep positions. That’s why we reacted. To be a bit more offensive.
“We also wanted to be able to react defensively when Paris brought in a few more attacking players with pace. ‘Phonzy’ is 3 km/h faster than João. João was decent today.”
Davies has started the last two games on the bench for Bayern.
