As he announced earlier this week, Manuel Neuer is not in Germany’s squad for the upcoming matches against Turkey and Austria.
The decision was made in consultation with Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann, who has hinted at recalling the 37-year-old in March if all goes according to plan.
“We all hope that he plays extremely consistently until the next international break. Then things will look completely different,” said Nagelsmann.
“It was a joint decision. I’ve had very good contact with Manuel over the last few months, he’s kept me informed of every little step in his development, even just progress in the gym. We had a lot of phone calls, a lot of WhatsApp contacts, we kept in touch,” added Nagelsmann.
Above all, the Germany coach doesn’t want to risk an injury setback for Neuer.
“There are clear statistics that can be documented after such a serious injury. We’re all over the moon that Manu is back. The first few games are very, very good, but then it’s clear that there is a small period where there is a risk of muscular injury,” he said.
