Speaking to Nice-Matin, AS Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana (24) has not ruled out remaining at the Principality club, despite being strongly linked with a summer departure.
L’Équipe reported at the end of March that both Fofana, as well as club and international teammate Axel Disasi (25), will leave Les Monégasques this summer.
Both have contracts running until the summer of 2025 but are expected to leave this summer. The duo, who made their France international debuts in 2022, and were both selected for the Qatar World Cup, have now garnered international attention, and the club, as well as the players, perceive now as the right time to part ways – reported L’Équipe.
Notably, Fofana has been linked with a move to Ligue 1 rivals Paris Saint-Germain by Le Parisien. Responding to a question from Get French Football News’ Luke Entwistle, Fofana said his future at Monaco wasn’t linked to a Champions League qualification, with the club currently fourth in the table. “I don’t think my season is linked to the club’s objectives (reaching the Champions League). It’s a bit of a well-worn phrase but I am under contract until 2025 and I count on respecting it until 2025,” he said.
Now, speaking to Nice-Matin, Fofana said that it is possible for him to be in his prime and play for Monaco simultaneously. “Why not stay at Monaco? In 2017, ASM were the biggest team in the league. Why can’t that be the case next season? And why not with me? Everyone is saying that it’s time to leave or say that I’m going to leave, but there are players in their prime playing at Lyon and Marseille. I’m not ruling anything out. Honestly, I’m the last person to think about my future,” said the France international.
