Monaco pursuing deal for Southampton centre-back Mohammed Salisu

AS Monaco are pursuing a deal to sign Southampton FC centre-back and Ghana international Mohammed Salisu (24), according to a report from Foot Mercato. The 24-year-old is expected to part ways with the Saints following their relegation to the Championship. The same can be said regarding fellow Southampton centre-backs Duje Caleta-Car and Armel Bella-Kotchap. The Saints are not expected to retain Salisu given he was left out of the playing squads at the end of the season due to doubts over his commitment once the club’s relegation to the Premier League was confirmed. His last appearance as a Southampton player was on March 18th, during Southampton’s frantic 3-3 Premier League draw against Tottenham.

Salisu is entering the final year of his contract with the Saints. Ligue 1 side AS Monaco are reportedly very keen on his signing. Foot Mercato understand that negotiations have started with all the relevant parties. Salisu would compensate for the departure of Malang Sarr, who spent last season with Les Monégasques on loan from Chelsea, and the expected sale of France international Axel Disasi. The former Stade de Reims centre-back has reportedly caught the eye of Manchester United.
