Monaco confirm signing of Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu

Monaco have confirmed the signing of Ghana international Mohammed Salisu from Southampton.

The 24-year-old joined the Saints in 2020 from Real Valladolid in a deal worth around £11 million.

He went on to make 80 appearances across all competitions at St Mary’s Stadium, with a goal to his name.

But the young defender endured a difficult 2022-23 campaign as he was left out of the team for the final two months due to issues with his commitment.

He had a year remaining on his contract at St Mary’s but wasn’t interested to remain at the Hampshire outfit, especially after their relegation to the Championship.

Salisu looked close to joining Fulham earlier this month but the move ultimately collapsed, with the Cottagers signing Calvin Bassey.

This opened the door for Monaco who soon wrapped up a deal for the 24-year-old.

The Ghana international has penned a five-year contract with the Ligue 1 side who agreed a £17m fee to sign him, per the Daily Mail.

Monaco endured a disappointing 2022-23 season as they failed to qualify for Europe after finishing sixth in the standings.

The Red and Whites reacted to their dismal league performance by dismissing Belgian coach Philippe Clement.

They have now installed Adi Hütter who has had coaching stints at Red Bull Salzburg, Young Boys, Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Monchengladbach.
