Mike Maignan no longer sure of Milan renewal amid Chelsea interest

Although he does not seem keen on a prospective move to Chelsea, France’s new number one goalkeeper Mike Maignan could nevertheless see his future called into question this summer, not least in the wake of Milan’s dismissal of technical director Paolo Maldini.

According to L’Équipe this morning, the former Lille goalkeeper had chosen the Rossoneri over Chelsea and Tottenham back in 2021, having been convinced by the project put forward to him by the former defender.

In the wake of Maldini’s departure, though, Maignan is no longer certain of wanting to put pen to paper on the two-year contract extension which was on its way to being finalised. The Ligue 1 winner is still tied to the Champions League semi-finalists for another three years.

Amid interest from Chelsea – as well as other Premier League clubs – the 27-year-old would like to take his time before making a definite decision. For now, though, his attention turns to France’s double header of Euro 2024 qualifiers, with Brice Samba set to take his place for tonight’s match against Gibraltar.
