La Provence are reporting that Olympique de Marseille have failed to find an agreement with Marcelo Gallardo. The former River Plate manager will not succeed Igor Tudor in the dugout at the Vélodrome.
Days of negotiations between Marseille and the Argentinian manager didn’t find a positive conclusion. Despite positive initial talks between Gallardo, Pablo Longoria and Javier Ribalta, the former was hesitant to take the helm at Marseille, leading to the collapse of negotiations.
Reports from South America have suggested that Gallardo turned down Les Phocéens, but La Provence have reported that having provided Gallardo with an ultimatum to respond within 24 hours, the atmosphere became polluted and tense, creating sub-optimal conditions within which to find an agreement.
With Gallardo now out of the picture, Lille OSC manager Paulo Fonseca and former Athletic Bilbao manager Marcelino look like the most likely candidates to take over from Tudor, who left at the end of the season, just halfway into a two-year contract.
