According to BILD, Manuel Neuer wants to play at least two Bundesliga games before the Germany squad meet for the 2022 World Cup next month. The 36-year-old wants to play against Werder Bremen and Schalke.
Neuer injured himself in training on October 6 prior to their Klassiker against Borussia Dortmund. That resulted in him missing the final training session but he still insisted on playing in the 2-2 draw. Discussing Neuer’s involvement against BVB, Julian Nagelsmann said: “That was probably a tad too early.”
Missing Bayern’s last five games across all competitions, Neuer is out of Saturday’s game against Mainz and Tuesday’s game against Inter and potentially at Hertha Berlin next weekend.
Despite a period on the sidelines, Nagelsmann still expects Neuer to be fit enough for the World Cup next month: “I firmly believe that he will play at the World Cup. We’re doing everything for that. The corner joint just needs rest but he has no structural injury.”
