Manchester United star David De Gea is set to discuss details over a new Old Trafford contract in the coming weeks, respected journalist Rudy Galetti has told GiveMeSport.

Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag could still sanction incomings and outgoings ahead of the transfer window slamming shut, but it appears his first-choice goalkeeper is going nowhere at the moment.

Man United contract news – David De Gea

According to The Sun, De Gea is willing to take a pay cut as he looks to secure his long-term future at Manchester United.

The report suggests the Red Devils have activated a 12-month extension option written into his contract, keeping him on the club’s books until the summer of 2024, but the Spaniard is looking to clinch a fresh three-year deal.

De Gea’s current agreement is worth £375,000-per-week, making him Manchester United’s highest-paid player.

But it has emerged that ten Hag has set his sights on eliminating unrest in the dressing room by setting a new £200,000-per-week wage cap.

Galetti recently told GiveMeSport that De Gea is waiting to be given the green light by his boss before putting pen-to-paper on a new long-term contract.

What has Rudy Galetti said about De Gea?

Galetti understands that De Gea will only be handed fresh terms by the Manchester United hierarchy if he is willing to take a pay cut.

The Italian journalist is aware that further talks will be held behind the scenes in the coming weeks.

Galetti told GiveMeSport: “For sure, in a possible new contract, there will be a reduction in his salary.

“Some details are to be discussed in the next weeks.”

Should Man United hand De Gea a new contract?

De Gea has made 514 appearances for Manchester United, according to Transfermarkt, so there is no doubt that he has been a terrific servant.

He has also remained the Red Devils’ first-choice option between the sticks despite the uncertainty over his long-term future, with him failing to miss a single minute of the Premier League season.

Sofascore statistics show De Gea has pulled off 54 saves in the top flight this term, while eight clean sheets have been picked up along the way.

But it seems ten Hag could still bring in competition as Manchester United have joined Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in targeting Brentford custodian David Raya.

If the Spain international heads to Old Trafford, the Red Devils may be better off getting De Gea off the wage bill instead of having a second-choice option on hefty wages.
