Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is a big fan of Barcelona and Netherlands international Frenkie de Jong and may look to bring the Dutch star to Old Trafford next summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.
The midfielder is currently in Qatar on World Cup duty with Louis van Gaal’s Oranje squad.

Man Utd transfer news – Frenkie de Jong
Last month, Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth revealed to GiveMeSport that Manchester United were still interested in securing the signature of de Jong if he became available in the future.
Sources in the Netherlands indicated that the Red Devils had been suggested to have agreed to a £56m deal for the midfielder in the summer, but the deal had to be pulled due to a wage dispute between the player and the La Liga giants.
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has recently told GiveMeSport that a deal for the Barcelona star will be impossible for ten Hag’s side in January, but the club still maintain a long-term interest and could look to move for the player in the summer.
And O’Rourke has suggested something along the same lines and believes that the Dutch manager’s interest in de Jong could mean that this is a deal that United revisit next summer.
What has O’Rourke said about Man Utd and de Jong?
O’Rourke told GiveMeSport: “They spent a lot of time trying to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona last summer but they just couldn’t get that deal over the line in the end.
“We all know he’s a big favourite of ten Hag, but I think it’s going to be a hard deal to do, especially in January.
“It’s something that they might revisit in the summer.”
What next for de Jong and Man Utd?
For now, it looks like ten Hag will have to deal with the midfield he currently has at his disposal, with a move for the 25-year-old looking like an unlikely prospect until at least the end of next season.
As for de Jong, his immediate focus will be on attempting to fire the Netherlands to their first-ever World Cup success, as they prepare themselves to face Argentina in Friday evening’s quarter-final clash.
The 49-time international has played in 99% of minutes at the tournament in Qatar, providing one goal and one assist in four appearances, according to Transfermarkt.
The former Ajax man has certainly impressed on the world’s biggest stage, as shown by an impressive average Sofascore rating of 7.42 for his performances at the World Cup so far, suggesting he could adapt to the pressures of playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world in Manchester United.
Whilst ten Hag will already be looking for a way in which he can this time succeed in securing de Jong’s signature at Old Trafford, the Dutch midfielder has more pressing matters to deal with in the immediate future.
