Manchester United are reportedly keeping a close eye on the situation of Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe as current Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag remains under the microscope at Old Trafford.
Man Utd had a really poor season last term, but ultimately decided to stick with Ten Hag this summer, though it seems the club are still not 100% convinced by the Dutch tactician and could be prepared to make a change if the opportunity presents itself.
This has led them to monitor Howe’s situation at Newcastle, according to Football Insider, who add that the 46-year-old has had a falling out with Magpies director Paul Mitchell.
Howe has largely impressed during his time at St James’ Park, but it may be that his future there is no longer certain, and that could present a tempting opportunity for United to swoop.
Ten Hag to be replaced by Howe at Man United?
It’s fair to say that MUFC fans will probably be a bit divided over the managerial position right now, with Ten Hag showing some promise by delivering two trophies in two seasons in charge, even if there has clearly not been enough consistency overall, and the style of football has, more often than not, been pretty poor.
At the same time, the former Ajax boss has perhaps laid the foundations for something promising that could be built on if he is given more time, which can be crucial for managers even if they’ve not made the most impressive start.
United will perhaps look at Mikel Arteta at Arsenal as the prime example of this, while even Jurgen Klopp took some time to really turn Liverpool into serious contenders for major trophies.
At the same time, it might be unwise to ignore the fact that Howe could be a significant upgrade on Ten Hag, and that if United don’t snap him up, someone else might.
