Game of the week:  AS Monaco  Lille OSC, Wednesday 20:00 (UK)

The postponement of this match has favoured Lille more than Monaco. The match, scheduled to take place over a week ago, was, like the other two fixtures going ahead on Wednesday, postponed in order to further French sides’ progression in European competition. Whilst Lille failed to progress against Aston Villa in the Europa Conference League, they still have a great chance of qualifying for next season’s Champions League. Paulo Fonseca has been bolstered by the returns of Edon Zhegrova, who missed the second leg against Aston Villa, and Nabil Bentaleb, who was suspended for LOSC’s 1-0 victory over Strasbourg over the weekend. The duo will bolster a squad that is still full of confidence, despite that European elimination.

Monaco may be confident after beating fellow podium-sitters Brest over the weekend but they approach this game depleted. Aleksandr Golovin suffered an ankle injury in training last week and is now likely to miss the end of the season. Les Monégasques’ win at the Stade Francis-Le Blé also came at a cost. 2-0 up in second-half added-time, Wilfried Singo and Eliesse Ben Seghir, Golovin’s most natural replacement, both received red cards for violent conduct. Both will miss the game against Lille – and maybe more. Nonetheless, whilst Adi Hütter’s options in certain positions will be limited on Wednesday night, Monaco go into the game in strong form. Hütter’s side haven’t lost since mid-February, and having earned their first home win of 2024, against Rennes, just over a fortnight ago, the Principality club have got a proverbial monkey off their back. A win would almost certainly secure a podium place for Monaco but Lille will have their say as they look to leapfrog Brest into third.
