Levy now ‘playing waiting game’ over £20m deal at Hotspur Way

Levy now ‘playing waiting game’ over £20m deal at Hotspur Way

Tottenham target Djed Spence wouldn’t start every week which might be why the north Londoners aren’t willing to match Middlesbrough‘s asking-price, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

Spurs have identified the 21-year-old as their primary right wing-back target this summer, but they’re yet to reach an agreement over the youngster’s services.

What’s the latest news involving Spence?

Conte’s side have got the majority of their business completed with little difficulty, with Fraser Forster, Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison and Clement Lenglet already on board.

But Tottenham have so far come unstuck in their attempts to sign Spence, with Boro yet to budge on their initial asking price.

The Telegraph reported earlier this week that Spurs had agreed a £15m fee, with add ons making it £20m, although other outlets have since claimed that nothing is close.

Tottenham were hoping to have Spence signed up before their pre-season tour of South Korea, but that no longer looks possible.

And Brown reckons that the fact he wouldn’t start regularly might be playing a role in the deal being delayed.

What did Brown say about Spence?

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I’m not convinced he would start every week in that team and that means Spurs probably aren’t willing to pay a massive fee for him.

“I think they know the player would like to join them and it doesn’t look like they have any serious competition, so I think it’s a waiting game and Spurs are hoping his club blink first.”

Would Spence be Tottenham’s first choice?

Whatever ends up happening with Tottenham’s two current right wing-backs, Spence has got a huge task on his hands.

Depending on what the future holds for Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty, the ex-Forest loanee will either be competing against a Brazil international or someone who’s played more than 100 times in the Premier League.

Regardless, it’s likely that Spence’s own lack of top-flight experience will have him second in the pecking order to begin with, but with games coming thick and fast during this hectic season, the youngster should get his chances, especially with Conte known for rotating his wide players.
