Bayer 04 Leverkusen have officially confirmed the signing of Alejandro Grimaldo from Benfica.

The 27-year-old full-back will move to Germany on a free transfer when his contract expires this summer.

He has signed a contract with ‘Die Werkself’ until 2027.

“Alejandro Grimaldo is an agile, technical full-back who is very tactically astute. He is capable of scoring goals and has a lot of experience and class,” said Bayer 04 managing director for sport Simon Rolfes.

“We are delighted to have been able to convince Alejandro of our ambitious concept for the coming years.”

For Grimaldo, the move from Portugal to Germany is “an exciting challenge”.

“I played for seven years at a top European club,” said the Spanish defender.

“But I’m just excited to show what I’m made of in the Bundesliga. For me, it’s one of the best leagues in Europe and certainly unique in terms of the ambience and atmosphere in the stadiums.

“The fact that a Bundesliga club like Bayer 04 has made an effort to sign me makes me very proud. I am sure we will have a fantastic time together.”
