Leipzig and Tottenham agree to extend Werner’s loan

Timo Werner enjoyed a satisfactory loan spell at Tottenham in the second half of the 2023/24 season.

Sky Germany reports that Leipzig and Tottenham have agreed to extend the 28-year-old’s loan stint for another season.

Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano and German transfer expert Florian Plettenberg both claim that a lower cost purchase option is part of the new deal.

After a difficult start to the 2023/24 season at Leipzig (14 games, 2 goals), Timo Werner felt like he needed a change in January of 2024 and agreed on a loan deal to Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

Werner was quick to adapt to the English playing style, having played for another English team (Chelsea) between 2020 and 2022. He collected 2 goals and 3 assists in 14 games for Tottenham – a respectable output for a new player.

Even though the club was also happy with Werner‘s return, they decided against the buying option of €17m – according to Sky Germany. However, Tottenham don‘t want to lose Timo Werner – and are now working on a new loan deal with a smaller buying option or obligation of around €14m – €15m.

Werner was hoping to get the call up for this year‘s Euro 2024 tournament in Germany, but is now focusing on a new season in England, since he wants to stay in London.
