Leeds now targeting ‘season-defining signing’ after Wober deal at Elland Road

Leeds United are now ‘absolutely’ able to focus on bringing in an attacker following the signing of Maximilian Wöber, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The Whites are believed to be in the market for a new forward due to Patrick Bamford’s persistent injury issues and now that they have brought in a defender, they can focus their attention on that area of the pitch.

Wober, a versatile defender capable of playing either at centre-back or left-back, arrived from Red Bull Leipzig in a deal worth €20 million (£17.7m) to help ease Leeds’ woes at the back.

However, Football Insider recently claimed that Bamford may be set for an extended spell on the sidelines after failing to recover from a hernia operation as expected.

The one-cap England international has only made four Premier League starts this season due to several fitness complaints, and Phil Hay has revealed Viktor Gyokeres and Che Adams have been identified as potential replacements.

“He’s been linked before and Orta has definitely has had an eye on him,” he said on the Phil Hay Show. “He’s kind of been in the ether in the same way that Che Adams at Southampton has been as well.

“To my mind, he clearly scores goals and clearly has something about him. He clearly would fit the model that Leeds tend to go for.”

What has Jones said about Leeds?

When asked if Wober’s early arrival in the January window means the Leeds hierarchy can now focus on bringing in an attacker, Jones disclosed that he definitely believes that to be the case.

In an interview with GMS, he said: “Yeah, absolutely. This is the position that ultimately defines their season.

“Can they find a focal point in a team? A goalscorer? A new Patrick Bamford that they can lean on and know that those big moments, those big chances are going to be eaten up.”

Would Gyokeres be a good signing?

Gyokeres showcased his clinical nature in front of goal last term, registering 18 goals and five assists in 47 appearances for Coventry City.

The Sweden international has maintained that form in the current campaign too, finding the back of the net on 12 occasions in his 25 Championship outings to date.

As per FBref, Gyokeres has also ranked in the 99th percentile for progressive passes received, 97th for shot-creating actions, 95th for competed dribbles and touches in the attacking penalty area, and 86th for expected assists amongst his positional peers over the last year.

Gyokeres could be the ideal addition to Leeds’ forward line, therefore, providing Jesse Marsch would some much-needed additional firepower.
