Bayer Leverkusen suffered their first defeat since February 19 this evening, going down 2-1 at home to local rivals FC Köln.
In a match moved from Sunday to Friday to accommodate Bayer’s schedule, which includes two Europa League semi-final games against Roma, Davie Selke opened the scoring for Köln with a header in the 14th minute.
Die Werkself equalized 14 minutes later through Amine Adli, but Selke’s second goal in the 36th minute made it 2-1 for the visitors, who held on to see off their local rivals.
Elsewhere on Friday, Mainz suffered a second successive defeat as relegation candidates Schalke 04 picked up three vital points with a 3-2 away win.
Mainz equalized twice before Marius Bülter kept his cool from the penalty spot in stoppage time to give Schalke all three points.
The win lifted the Gelsenkirchen side out of the relegation zone and into 14th place ahead of the weekend’s remaining fixtures.
