Khéphren Thuram: “My dad and brother said they were very happy and proud.”

OGC Nice midfielder Khéphren Thuram received his first call-up to the France squad on Thursday and rounded off a “great day” by registering an assist as Les Aiglons beat Sheriff Tiraspol to reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa Conference League.

It is the first time Nice have reached the quarter-finals of a European competition since 1960, and in the post-match mixed zone, attended by Get French Football News journalist Luke EntwistleThuram reflected on a good day at the office.

“It’s a great day because I was called up for the national team and then we’ve qualified for the quarter-finals [of the UEFA Europa Conference League] so I’m very, very happy,” began Thuram, who then delved into the details of the squad announcement viewing experience. “I was on my phone watching the announcement. I was with my teammates and we all watched it together, and I was very happy because they were all very happy for me. We were a bit disappointed for Jean-ClairTodibo but he was very happy for me and he gave me lots of hugs so I thank him for that,” said the former AS Monaco academy product.

“I have never played in the same team as Marcus, but we have played in the garden together.”

Thuram then revealed the contents of the preceding phone call with his father Lillian Thuram, the second most capped player in Les Bleus history, and brother Marcus Thuram, who plays for Borussia Mönchenglabach and who represented France in the recent Qatar World Cup.

[My first call] was to my brother (Marcus) and my dad (Lillian). [My brother and dad] said they were very happy for me and that they were very, very proud and then we just spoke about life and laughed around as usual,” said Thuram, whose dream of featuring alongside his brother for the France national team is now close to being realised.

He continued, “I’ve never played in the same team as Marcus, but we have played in the garden together and we’ve been at the same club, but we’ve never played in the same team. I hope [we get to play together]. That would be terrific!”
