Spain are in the Middle East to play their final game before the 2022 World Cup. Being in Group E, they don’t start their campaign until next Wednesday. That offers them a chance to get a friendly in as preparation with Jordan the opposition in Amman.

Luis Enrique’s last match was a late 1-0 win in Portugal in September which ensured Nations League process and served as a timely boost ahead of the World Cup. However the last few years have seen them frequently struggle against some of international football’s lesser likes and a convincing victory will be sought here ahead of next week’s World Cup opener against what is likely to be a very defensive Costa Rica side.

There were few major surprises in what is a 26-man Spain squad for the World Cup so the former Barcelona boss isn’t exactly short on options for this game. There is much more doubt about the makeup of La Roja’s best starting XI though and we are likely to see it change throughout the tournament, particularly during the group stage.

This match may provide another opportunity for Athletic Club’s Nico Williams who was very much the breakout star in September. He’s unlikely to be a starter during the tournament but he could have a big role to play off the bench and the same could be said of Ansu Fati who was left out of the previous squad and hasn’t been in great form. They are among a number of players competing for a role either side of Alvaro Morata, the only natural striker in the squad.

The midfield for the World Cup is expected to be the Barcelona trio of Pedri, Gavi and Sergio Busquets but the likes of Koke and Carlos Soler could feature prominently here with neither having played much of late for different reasons.

As for the opposition, Jordan are only the 84th ranked team in the world but they have had a good 2022, winning 8 of their 9 matches to date. That loss came by a 2-1 margin against Qatar-bound Australia in a friendly and they have kept 5 straight clean sheets heading into this game, albeit against limited opposition. Adnan Hamad’s side will be hoping to put in a performance against the 2010 world champions.

Score Prediction: Jordan 0-1 Spain

Jordan are no world beaters but they are solid enough defensively to ensure this won’t be a stroll in the park for Spain. It’ll be decent preparation for the kind of game they might face next week and we shouldn’t expect La Roja to be at their absolute best with avoiding injuries another priority here. They should get the win but it may not be pretty.
