FC Köln defender Jonas Hector will not come out of international retirement to represent Germany at the World Cup in Qatar this month, as reported exclusively by Sky Germany.
Hansi Flick wanted to convince Hector to return to the national team setup and although flattered by the request, the Köln captain doesn’t plan on returning. Hector retired from international duty in October 2020 after representing his country 43 times.
The left-back position is causing Flick a headache with Robin Gosens and David Raum currently out of form. Two further options for Flick is Christian Günter (SC Freiburg) and Luca Netz (Borussia Mönchengladbach), but neither have considerable international experience.
Flick is due to announce his 26-man squad for the World Cup on November 10. Germany warm-up with a game against Oman before kick-starting their campaign against Japan with games against Spain and Costa Rica to follow.
