Jon Rahm has issued a statement after his epic collapse at the 2025 PGA Championship held at Quail Hollow, which ended Sunday, the 18th of May.
Rahm, a member of LIV Golf’s breakaway league, knows how to win golf’s greatest tournaments, having triumphed at the US Open in 2021 and The Masters in 2023. And so, when he pushed Scottie Scheffler close to sharing the lead by the 12th hole on the final day of the 72-hole competition, there was perhaps an expectation that he’d at least be competitive until the close.
Scheffler played his part. He scored -2 on the back nine to complete a card 71 on the day, and finished at -11 after four days of competition. Rahm, though, lost his head and went +5 over the last three holes. It was a disaster that cost him millions of dollars.

Jon Rahm’s Statement After ‘Embarrassing’ Display
Rahm could have gone band for band with Scheffler, but lost out on an extra $3 million
At one point Rahm had overcome a five-shot deficit. He was -3 on the day after just 11 holes. But his final three holes completely doomed him.
Here are his first words after walking off the course with a share of eight position, after jostling for first.
“Am I embarrassed a little bit about how I finished today? Yeah.”
“But I just need to get over it, get over myself,” he said, per AP. “It’s not the end of the world. It’s not like I’m a doctor or a first responder, where somebody if they have a bad day, truly bad things happen. I’ll get over it. I’ll move on.”
Rahm continued: “The last three holes, it’s a tough pill to swallow right now. Especially knowing 16 is not the narrowest fairway in the world. That bunker is in play. You’re lucky enough, you have a shot to the pin. Not a terrible swing, but bad enough to put me in a real difficult situation.”
Had Rahm continued his comeback and managed to push Scheffler off top spot, then he’d have earned the $3.42 million that will head into the American’s bank account. Instead, the Spaniard will earn around $598,000 — almost $3 million less.
Rahm found the bunker on the 14th hole, hoped to save birdie as he put his second shot around 10-foot from the hole, but left with a par. Everything seemed to go wrong after that, he said.
“I think it was a bit of nerves.”
“Can’t pinpoint exactly right now. I’ll go back to what happened. I didn’t feel like I rushed anything. I didn’t feel like the process was bad.”
Ultimately, he hopes he can build on the experience by gunning for the US Open in June, which is the third of golf’s fourth majors this year. “I’m really happy I put myself in position and hopefully learn from this and give it another go in the U.S. Open,” he said.
“I think it’s the first time I’ve been in position to win a major that close, and haven’t done it. The only times I think I’ve been in the lead in a major on a Sunday, I’ve been able to close it out. This is a very different situation.”
