Chelsea emerged victorious in the FIFA Club World Cup final on Sunday evening after thumping Paris Saint-Germain. PSG have been imperious this season and were expected to add more silverware to their trophy cabinet at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
However, the Blues denied them as they produced a dominant performance. Chelsea went into the half-time break with a three-goal lead thanks to Cole Palmer’s brilliant brace and Joao Pedro’s strike in the 43rd minute.
PSG huffed and puffed to try and get back in the game in the second 45 minutes but they could not find a way past Robert Sanchez as Chelsea cruised to an unlikely – yet fully deserved – 3-0 victory.
Joao Pedro Speaks Out After Being Floored by Luis Enrique
Pedro has explained why it all kicked off
PSG’s players started to lose their heads a bit in the final minutes of the game, with Joao Neves sent off after pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair. And there was pure chaos after the final whistle when Pedro was floored by PSG manager, Luis Enrique.
Enrique put his hands on Pedro’s face and the Brazilian went sprawling to the ground. Players from both sides rushed in to intervene and it was several minutes before they were separated and tensions were eased.
Pedro has now spoken to the media where he shed more light on the incident. The Brazilian explained that he initially went over to defend compatriot Andrey Santos from PSG players. He said:
“I went to protect Andrey, I saw their players were crowding Andrey. Like a good Brazilian, I went to protect my friend. A lot of people were arriving and in that mess, I ended up getting shoved. It’s part of it. They didn’t know how to lose, but that’s football.”
He said in another interview, per MSN: “I don’t need to talk about them. Everyone wants to win the game and, in the end, I think they lost their heads.
“But this is football. This has happened. Now we need to enjoy it because we won the tournament, that’s it. I don’t want to talk too much about them because you know how it works. Football is this.”
Pedro and Chelsea will now embark on their summer holidays before returning to action ahead of their first friendly of the 2025/26 season, which takes place against Bayer Leverkusen on August 8. They kickstart their Premier League campaign nine days later at home to FA Cup winners, Crystal Palace.
