João Cancelo’s struggles to open the door for Barcelona youngster

An up-and-coming member of the defensive ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona is expected to be afforded a more prominent role in the club’s first-team ranks over the weeks ahead.

The player in question? Héctor Fort.

Fort, for his part, has of course featured intermittently at senior level for Barcelona across the season to date.

All told, the full-back, still just 17, has racked up eight appearances across all competitions, notching a pair of assists along the way.

And, if the latest word stemming from the media is anything to go by, Fort’s familiarity with Xavi’s squad looks set to increase ever further before the campaign is out.

This comes amid the recent struggles of João Cancelo.

Portuguese international Cancelo is of course fresh off a week to forget.

Responsible for high-profile mistakes in arguably Barca’s two biggest outings of the campaign – against Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid – the 29-year-old’s place in the starting XI has been thrown into doubt.

Fort, in turn, is ready to step up, ahead of slotting in on the left of the Blaugrana’s backline over the remaining weeks of the La Liga campaign.
