Borussia Dortmund’s title slip-up on the final matchday is still haunting Emre Can.

“The season hasn’t been satisfying for me at all”

Emre Can still hasn’t shaken off the disappointment of not winning the Bundesliga last season.


Borussia Dortmund needed to beat Mainz on the final day of the season to clinch the title, but were held to a 2-2 draw, allowing Bayern Munich to leapfrog them at the top of the table.

“It is still difficult to even talk about it,” Can told SID in an interview ahead of Germany’s upcoming games.

“The whole city, the fans and ourselves were ready to win this title. The fact that we didn’t will probably stay in our minds forever.”

Trailing 1-0, Dortmund were awarded a penalty, which Can was supposed to take, but he allowed Sebastien Haller to shoot, only for the striker to miss from the spot.

“I wanted to take it and I felt good. That’s why I ran to the spot. But then Seb asked if he could shoot,” said Can, who insisted he doesn’t blame Haller in any way.

“He wanted to help the team. If I had kicked and missed, people would have said: ‘why didn’t he give the ball to someone else?’ There is no blame on Seb.”
