After Saturday’s disastrous 3-2 defeat to Turkey, Germany suffered another blow on Tuesday night, losing 2-0 to Austria in Vienna after another underwhelming performance.
Just seven months before they host the European Championship on home soil, the German team have hit rock bottom, captain Ilkay Gündogan said in a post-match interview.
“It can’t get any worse right now. That is the only positive thing,” Gündogan told ZDF.
He also said that Leroy Sane’s red card for shoving Philipp Mwene encapsulated the game for Germany.
“Leroy’s red card sums it all up. The frustration, the disappointment. We made it far too easy for the Austrians. We were not good enough,” the Germany captain said.
