‘Incredible’ £80m star ‘might become available’ at Old Trafford

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire “might become available” in the summer, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The 29-year-old was recently linked with a move to Aston Villa, but Jones cannot see anything happening this month.

Man United transfer news – Harry Maguire

TalkSPORT journalist Anil Kandola recently claimed (via Daily Star) that Maguire was close to joining Villa.

However, that story has since been quashed, with it now being reported that the Englishman will not be leaving Old Trafford for Villa Park in this window.

According to the MailOnline, Maguire is not set for a transfer to Villa in January. The outlet states that United manager Erik ten Hag is keen to keep him at the club as defensive cover.

As per Transfermarkt, Maguire has only made four starts in the Premier League this season, so it would not be a surprise if he did want to leave Old Trafford. However, it appears any move will have to take place in the summer.

What has Dean Jones said about Harry Maguire and Man United?

While Maguire is unlikely to depart United this month, Jones thinks it could be a different story in the next transfer window.

Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: “Look, the Maguire and Aston Villa links, he’s not going to be joining them this month. The story always seemed a little speculative.

“Right now, it’s not going to happen. But I think if we look towards the summer, it’s reasonable to expect that Harry Maguire might become available.”

Will Harry Maguire leave Man United in the summer?

It certainly looks like a possibility given his lack of game time this season. You would imagine that Maguire is not happy with the amount of minutes he is getting right now.

United paid Leicester City £80m back in 2019 to sign him, as reported by BBC Sport, but his stock has fallen massively since then. Nevertheless, you would still expect the England international to attract plenty of interest from the Premier League.

Described as an “incredible character” by Everton centre-back Conor Coady, who was speaking to Sky Sports, Maguire obviously has a lot of experience in the division and is an aerially dominant defender.

Last season, the former Leicester man won 2.5 aerial duels per league game, as per WhoScored. No player in United’s squad managed to record a higher average, so he does have his strengths.
