Illan Meslier says he is open to Leeds departure and responds to Chelsea links

Illan Meslier (23) has said that he is open to leaving Leeds United this summer after the club were relegated to the Championship, during an interview with RMC Sport.

Meslier is currently on France U21 duty and is preparing for the upcoming European Championships. However, his club future remains uncertain. The Frenchman lost his position as Leeds’ number one towards the end of the season, having to settle for a place on the bench during the final four Premier League matches of the season.

At the end of the season, Leeds’ relegation back to the Championship was confirmed, and naturally, players are being linked with departures.

During an interview with RMC, the former FC Lorient shot-stopper was asked where his future lies. “It is complicated when you’re in such a situation. We no longer have a coach, our club is being purchased by the 49ers group – there are lots of unknowns,” said the France U21 international.

For now, I have a contract until 2026. Officially, I still belong to Leeds. I will have to think about what could be the best project, be that at Leeds or another club,”  he continued. Back in January, Meslier was linked with a move to Chelsea by Foot Mercato, but the goalkeeper is wary of not making a move which would see him designated as the number two.

Asked specifically about the Chelsea links, Meslier replied, “If it is to go and be on the bench, I’m not interested in that. If it’s to be the number one, of course, you can’t say ‘I’m not interested in Chelsea.’ I’d prefer to go to a less reputable club where I’ll have more game time than a top European club where I’d sit on the bench.”
